Map for World Day Against the Death Penalty.

Filed under: Justice — admin @ 10:31 pm

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. It is also the 25th anniversary of the abolition of the death penalty in France.
To commemorate the events, I’ve made a GE map of the status of legislation worldwide, based on data from Amnesty International.

The maps describe the following country categories:
1. Abolitionist for all crimes: countries whose laws do not provide for the death penalty for any crime
2. Abolitionist for ordinary crimes only
3. Abolitionist in practice
4. Retentionist

There are time data in the datasets, so one could plot as a time series when countries abandoned the death penalty, but I did this and it was not so informative, so I left it.

The link to the map is here.

This beta shows how one can use GE to visualize such valuable available data, that otherwise sits, underexploited, in static html pages.
